Prelude:    Richard Harper

Chalice Lighting:

We are not alone. We are this flame, ancient as the stars, new as the vulnerable spark. We are not alone.

We are here. We are here for ourselves. We are here for each other. And…We are not alone.

Opening Hymn:     Lift Every Voice and Sing  SLT 149

Welcome & Announcement

Call to Worship:

When the way is difficult and dangerous, let us still choose what is good and just.

When evil comes to break us down and break us apart, let us still choose to carry on with each other.

When power from on high strikes fear in our hearts, let us still choose the courage to persist.

For we know that the love and power of God, which abides in us, will not be overcome.

Prayer of Invocation

First Sacred Reading:     Mark 6:1-6

He left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. On the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Then Jesus said to them, “Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown and among their own kin and in their own house.” And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief.

We give you but your own,  what e'er the gift may be; All that we have is yours alone, we give it gratefully

Second Sacred Reading:   Anguttara Nikaya

There is one thing that when cultivated and regularly practiced, leads to deep spiritual intention, to peace, to mindfulness and clear comprehension, to vision and knowledge, to a happy life here and now and to the culmination of wisdom and awakening. And what is that one thing? It is mindfulness centered on the body.
