Through the activism of our Senior Minister, our members and our friends, ASBC is involved in the following groups: Brooklyn for Peace, the War Resister’s League, Peace Action of New York State, the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, Control Arms, Occupy Faith, Occupy Sandy, the Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office, Stop and Frisk and Christian Peacemaker Teams. Many of these groups are dedicated to reducing violence and eradicating war, which is a recurring theme in Tom’s preaching.

ASBC is both a Welcoming (the term used by the Unitarian Universalists for being LGBT friendly) and an “Open and Affirming” (the term used by the United Church of Christ) congregation. Affiliation with these movements within the UCC and UU means we apportion funds to support the work of the UU and UCC organizations working to expand the rights of the LGTB community.
If you identify as LGBT and are looking for a supportive faith community in Brooklyn, ours is one you may want to consider! We also have a strong history of supporting LGBT clergy.
Rev. Ann Kansfield was ordained into the UCC through a four-way covenant with All Souls Bethlehem Church. She and her spouse, the Rev. Jennifer Aull, co-pastor the Greenpoint Reformed Church. It’s worth mentioning that Revs. Kansfield and Aull were the Grand Marshals of the Brooklyn 2011 Pride Parade!
Matthew Davis Fox’s Ordination
On Sunday, March 4, 2007 we celebrated the ordination of the Rev. Matthew Davis Fox. Matthew has been assisting Rev. Martinez on Sundays since graduating from the Pacific School of Religion and returning to the greater NY area. Now that he’s been ordained into the United Church of Christ, he will serve ASBC as a full-fledged Associate Minister. This is in addition to Matthew’s full-time call to serve the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. Matthew’s ordination was a very special day in the life of the Church .
Parishioner Claudette McLennon pauses during the post-ordination celebration for a photo with ASBC Minister Emeritus, Rev. Dr. Bill Nye, while Margaret Haas looks on (background, left).
